Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FitnessGram® - a comprehensive battery of health-related physical fitness tests. The test has five parts that show a level of fitness that offer a degree of defense against diseases that are caused by inactivity. The primary goal of the PFT is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity.

Who takes the test?
Students in grades 5, 7, and 9 will take the FITNESSGRAM®.

What is the test format?
The test consists of five performance components: aerobic capacity, abdominal strength, trunk strength, upper body strength, and flexibility.

The PFT provides information that can be used by (1) students to assess and plan personal fitness programs; (2) teachers to design the curriculum for physical education programs; and (3) parents and guardians to understand their children’s fitness levels.

The PFT administration window is open from February 1 to May 31.

Summary results of the PFT can be found in the annual School Accountability Report Card (SARC).
